Module code: 6BIOL004W
Faculty: Faculty of Science and Technology
Credit Level: 6
Credit value: 20
Available to: Faculty of Science and Technology students only, however students on some courses are unable to choose Westminster Electives  – see list of exemptions. Please note elective modules are subject to availability.

This module will enable you to develop a range of skills that will enhance your employability, while also gaining valuable experience in a professional environment of your choice. The module is structured around you planning and obtaining a work placement – a minimum of 150 hours, usually completed during the summer vacation – with a business or organisation in a sector relevant to your career aspirations.

The module will raise your self-confidence, self-awareness and self-marketing capabilities. In preparation for the placement, you will attend an interview with a member of the module team and agree a set of learning goals for the work placement. You will also attend a self-marketing workshop which includes CV writing, personal skills and strengths awareness. You will keep a learning journal for the duration of the placement, and you will also need to prepare time-related personal development action plans for your learning and skills needs and career aspirations.

Assessment will be based on your learning contract and journal, and your portfolio and action plan. The taught component of the module (in support of completing the coursework) will take place following completion of the placement, and will largely consist of tutorial sessions and interactive group work, but there will also be the chance for one-to-one consultations with staff to discuss career plans.

This module will only be available from 2017/18 academic year.
