For many nations sport and tourism are significant economic sectors and play important roles in society. This module gives you the opportunity to examine the characteristics of sports tourism, identifying how the motivations of sports tourists shape participation and behaviours. You will also explore supply characteristics, looking at local, national and global sporting events, the intermediaries and agents who influence the design of sporting products, and the development of sports tourism destinations.

The syllabus content will include defining sports tourism, categorising the sports tourist, the sports tourism experience, team versus individual sports and the impact on tourism, sports tourism destinations, evaluating supply in sports tourism, global sporting events, and contemporary issues in the sector. Teaching and learning will be structured around four hours of contact time each week (in two, two-hour blocks), and will include lecturer-led interactive sessions, case studies, group debates, seminars, tutorials, and site visits and guest speakers to relate conceptual ideas to real-world examples. Assessment will be based on two pieces of written work – an essay, which will enable you to demonstrate your understanding of sports tourism demand and its influence on destination development, and a briefing paper focusing
