Professional Practice

Module code: 5WSEL013W
Credit Level: 5
Credit value: 20
Semester: 2
Available to: Students in all faculties, however some courses already include cross-disciplinary modules and are structured to offer opportunities to expand professional skills. Students on these courses are unable to choose Westminster Plus Electives – check the list of courses

Please note: elective modules are subject to availability.

This Elective will provide you with a way to pursue professional practice, gain experience, develop new skills and enhance your employability. It will complement your studies, help to prepare you for your future career, and make you more competitive in the job market.

The module is combined with at least 75 hours spent working in a professional setting. You can choose the organisation you work with for this professional practice, and you may be able to draw on part-time work if your role has the responsibility and range of work relationships needed to meet the learning outcomes of the module. All proposed work placements need to be approved by the module leader and must comply with the University’s guidelines for student work.

You will identify specific learning goals to be completed as part of your placement, evaluate your own performance, develop insights about the real-life workings of an organisation, and analyse processes, practices and roles in the organisational process. Your learning is arranged as practical or work-based learning. You will be expected to negotiate voluntary work or a project that will fulfil the module learning outcomes with the organisation and your tutor, and you will meet with your module leader or tutor on a semi-regular basis. Assessment is based on your work plan and a portfolio.

You will be contacted in September 2017 with further information about how the module will be supported, including information on how to secure a professional opportunity through our Career Development Centre. If your course already supports a professional module (eg. an internship or work module), then please do speak with your course leader about the best option to support your professional placement if selecting this module.

What’s the advantage?

This module is great if you are interested in:

  • Testing your ability to expand your professional networks;
  • Demonstrating to future employers that you have the skills required to succeed in your chosen industry or professional role;
  • Showcasing your professional skills by gaining experience of working in an organisation which is linked to your career development.
