The module introduces you to the institutional practices and patterns of media around the globe – including African, Asian, Middle Eastern, North American and European media. Focusing on some of the main theoretical approaches to media systems and practices in different geographic regions, you will explore the key issues in international media and carry out comparative analysis of media systems.

The module will provide an overview of the globalisation of media, and examine global media infrastructures and markets, before covering a range of subjects including global news and information networks, the globalisation of entertainment media (Hollywood hegemony), global media cultures – commercialism vs public service tradition, global media contra-flows – Al-Jazeera, Mexican telenovelas and India’s Bollywood, the rise of non-Western media, and internationalising the internet. You will develop your skills in academic writing, effective presentation and discussion skills, as well as gaining introductory skills in academic research such as the uses of key databases and peer-reviewed journals, and core conventions of academic culture such as referencing and bibliographies.

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, seminars and an individual tutorial. Assessment will be based on class participation, a seminar presentation and summary, and a 2,000-word essay.
