Field trips

CONSTRUCTIONARIUM

Our students are offered the opportunity to join a week long field trip, the Constructionarium. Held at the National Construction College site at Bircham Newton in Norfolk, students experience the challenges and issues inherent with any construction project, helping them develop professional and personal skills. They construct scaled down versions of bridges, buildings, dams and civil engineering projects from all around the world. In 2015 we built Ravenspurn Oil Platform and Brewery Wharf.

Constructionarium provides our students with a hands-on opportunity to see how theory can translate into a real construction project. The students manage themselves in two project teams, designating their own team hierarchy to include project management, programme management, cost management, materials management, labour management and estimation.

The event is a true test of their skills; and they demonstrate their ability to collaborate within a real-time project environment.

We were delighted to have the support of our sponsors, Byrne Brothers Ltd, one of the UK’s premier concrete frame contractors, and Robert Bird Group a global structural, civil and construction engineering consultancy.
