Public and media interest in what we eat has never been greater. Emerging as one of the most popular sciences, human nutrition integrates knowledge from diverse areas of science to present a uniﬁed view of this dynamic discipline and its applications. You will examine how nutrients and eating patterns impact on health and well-being, and the role of diet in both health and disease.
We have well-equipped laboratories in all bioscience disciplines including a suite of biochemical test facilities for nutritional analysis, whole-body metabolism and determination of body composition. A lively research culture is reﬂected in current studies into metabolic features underlying obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2, nutritional intervention in over- and under-nourished populations, chronic disease nutritional epidemiology, and exercise and nutritional interventions for metabolic health.
In Years 2 and 3, students on the degree can choose to follow a theme focusing on Human Nutrition or can select the theme of ‘Human Nutrition with Exercise Science’, which focuses on the role that exercise and nutrition play in all aspects of human health and disease. The course will equip you with the skills needed for a career as a nutrition adviser or consultant in regulatory and organisational bodies, and in teaching and research, or to go on to postgraduate study.
The course presents you with an understanding of the molecular and physiological basis of the relationship between nutrition and human health and performance. You will study modules which cover the relevant aspects of human nutrition, physiology, public health, biochemistry and psychology.
The learning and teaching of the course relies on a mixture of face-to-face teaching and tutorial sessions, laboratory-based practicals, research seminars, and independent study, with classroom-based activities supported by online study material.
Assessment methods include open and closed examinations, essays, laboratory reports, literature reviews, oral presentations, in-class tests, dissertations and portfolios.

Our recently updated Human Nutrition BSc Honours is accredited by the Association for Nutrition(AfN); graduates from this course are eligible to join the Register as an Associate Nutritionist. The AfN recognises the high standards of training offered on our accredited courses at ~undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) designation is designed to help you make a rapid transition to full registration, normally after a period of three years, and develop a career in nutritional science.

The Association for Nutrition (AfN) accredits the BSc Honours Human Nutrition. The AfN is the recognised professional body for the regulation and registration of nutritionists, it embraces those involved in public health, care, food, exercise and policy. One of the Association’s responsibilities is running the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN).
This accreditation recognises the high standards of training that we offer on our course. The Associate Nutritionist (A.Nutr.) designation is designed to assist the recent graduate develop a career in Nutritional Science so that they can make rapid transition to full Registration, normally after a period of three years. Graduates from this degree course are immediately eligible (Fast-Track) for addition to the Register as Associate Nutritionists.
What is a Registered Nutritionist?
A Registered Nutritionist will be registered with the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), the competency-based register of individuals qualified in nutritional science and practice, maintained by the AfN.
What do Registered Nutritionists do?
Registered Nutritionists provide evidence-based information and guidance about the impacts of food and nutrition on the health and wellbeing of humans (at an individual or population level) or animals. Nutritionists have a good understanding of the scientific basis of nutrition and work in a range of settings, including research, education and in policy development. For example, nutritionists work in:
- health promotion
- within the NHS
- charities involved in heart health, diabetes and obesity, or international development
- sports nutrition
- weight loss
- in industry, e.g. food science or product development
- self employed consultancy, giving nutritional guidance to individuals and/or companies
- have specialist competencies in nutrition or public health nutrition
- follow the Code of Ethics and Statement of Professional Conduct
- work within their own scope of practice
- keep up to date through Continuing Professional Development and continuously improve their knowledge, skills and application of the science based practice of nutrition
- know how to recognise the highest standards of scientific evidence in nutrition and apply these standards safely and effectively in their practice of nutrition.

Fees, funding, bursaries and scholarships
In recent years the University of Westminster's scholarship scheme has been the largest university scholarships scheme in the UK, and our Scholarships Department won the Times Higher Education inaugural Award for Outstanding Support for Overseas Students.
All students on courses of a year or more and who are registered for more than three modules will be allocated a personal tutor.
Your personal tutor will be there to support you from induction onwards, helping you to integrate into the University, academically and socially, at an early stage. They will be able to give you advice and support on academic and personal matters affecting your study, as well as developmental advice through regular individual and group tutorials.
Polylang is a University-wide programme through which you can study a language as a free choice module.
Personal advice and counselling
While most students overcome any problems with help from friends, family or a personal tutor, the University's free counselling and advice services are there if you need them.

Study Abroad and Summer School programmes
Westminster's Study Abroad programme has been running for more than 15 years, and is one of the largest in the UK – each year we welcome hundreds of visiting students from universities all over the world.
If you are already studying outside the UK, the programme offers you the opportunity to study with us for one or two semesters, or for a period in the summer.
Sport and recreation
The University has extensive sport and recreation facilities, with a sports hall and gym at Harrow, a state-of-the-art gym at Regent Campus, and the University sports ground by the River Thames at Chiswick.
