Modern Languages and Cultures
The Department welcomes proposals in Contemporary Chinese Studies, French and Francophone Studies, and Translation Studies (translator training). We are also interested in cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural projects on the topic of migration, in particular in relation to the themes of our Hub for Migration, Exile, Languages and Spaces, as well as projects related to our unique collection of Chinese propaganda posters.
In Chinese Studies we have specific expertise in Gender and Sexuality Studies including Men and Masculinities, Migration and Diaspora, Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies, Visual Culture, Contemporary Political and Moral Discourse, Democracy and Human Rights, Christianity in Contemporary China, Social and Cultural Change in Urban China.
In French and Francophone Studies we invite proposals in the field of Modern and Contemporary French or Francophone Literature, Culture and Visual Culture, Modern and Contemporary Franco-British Cultural Relations (with a special interest in French/Francophone migration to London and its effects), War and Culture Studies (in particular the impact of the experience of war on French and Francophone Cultural Production).
In Translation Studies we are particularly interested in projects on translator training, collaboration in translation, and cultural impact on the translation process. We have expertise in a wide range of languages and cultures for supervision in Translation Studies.
