CILEx (Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) courses provide an alternative route to becoming a qualified lawyer. Our CILEx courses are taken part-time, so that you can continue to work while studying towards your qualification.

Students who have already completed a law degree or Graduate Diploma in Law are qualified to take the CILEx Level 6 qualifications, while those who have no previous legal experience or academic qualifications can start their legal education at CILEx Level 3 (equivalent to A Level standard).

Find out more about CILEx, how to qualify as a legal executive lawyer and career options available to you.

CILEx (not the University of Westminster) may allow certain exemptions for previous studies. Please view the CILEx exemptions table and contact CILEx directly to see what exemptions you may qualify for.

Please note that you must complete and pass a short written English test before you can enrol.

The CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice is the follow-on course from Level 3 Professional Diploma In Law and Practice. The Level 6 course is completed over two academic years on a part-time evening basis. We envisage that you complete three units of study in each year, which will require you to attend University two evenings per week during term-time.

Level 6 is equivalent to undergraduate level.

The CILEx Level 6 Single Subject Certificate recognises your achievement in a specific area of law and legal practice. The qualification is best suited to you if you do not wish to go on to become a legal executive lawyer, but still require recognition in a specific professional area of law and legal practice.

The qualification will, however, also act as an important milestone if you wish to move on to become a legal executive and Fellow of CILEx.

The CILEx Level 6 Graduate Fast-track Diploma is designed solely to accredit legal practice knowledge and understanding. It is aimed at those with significant and broad experience of the law (such as law graduates) who need a qualification specifically in relation to legal practice.

This course is suitable for you if you have successfully completed an LLB or GDL at a university in England and Wales within the last seven years.

CILEx is currently in consultation with the Legal Services Board with a view to scrapping this seven-year rule. If you would like to enrol but have obtained your LLB/GDL more than seven years ago, please contact Paul Bateman at pbateman@cilex.org.uk.
