Japanese – Evening Language Course

Would you like to learn Japanese in London? Join one of our part-time Japanese courses at our central London Regent Street Campus – just a few minutes' walk from Oxford Circus.

Our beginner Japanese courses start in October and January. If you already have some knowledge of Japanese you can also join part 2 or part 3 of the Beginner Japanese course.

We also have intermediate Japanese classes starting in October each year.

Who is this class for?

Japanese Beginner is the first exposure to the language, allowing you to start to communicate.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have no or little previous knowledge of Japanese.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Japanese for about 20 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you have studied Japanese for about 40 hours.

Booking

You can book:

  • Part 1 for £267 (£297 after 31 July)*
  • Parts 1,2 and 3 together for £550 (£607 after 31 July)*

To book all three parts, please proceed with booking Part 1 and add Parts 2 and 3 to your order when prompted during the checkout process. Please note that purchasing 3 Parts together equates to one single transaction, therefore, we do not accept cancellation requests for Parts 2 and 3 individually. Cancellations requests must be made more than 16 days before the start of Part 1.

Course content

Our Japanese lessons follow a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language you need to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.

Part 1

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • greetings
  • personal introductions (professions, ages, nationalities, countries)
  • numbers 0–100
  • telling basic time (hours, half past)
  • telephone number
  • simple shopping conversation

Grammar

You will learn:

  • demonstratives (kore, sore, are, kono, sono, ano, koko, soko, asako)
  • particles
  • Hiragana (Japanese alphabet)

Part 2

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • daily activities
  • directions
  • descriptions of things
  • invitations
  • extended shopping conversation

Grammar

You will learn:

  • verbs in the non-past tense and past tense (okimasu, nemasu, benkyo shimasu, hatarakimasu, yasumimasu, owarimasu, ikimasu, kimasu, kaerimasu, tabemasu, nomimasu etc.)
  • adjectives in the present tense
  • Katakana (Japanese alphabet)

Part 3

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • location of things
  • whereabouts of people
  • likes and dislikes
  • capability and ability
  • ordering food

Grammar

You will learn:

  • counters (tsu counting system, nin people)
  • particles ga and wa
  • adverbs of degree

 

There may be slight content variations at the discretion of the tutor. We may, for example, include additional content when general progress is good, or vary content according to students' interests. The distribution of content across parts may vary from one year to the next depending on the length of parts.

Learning resources

We will use Minna no Nihongo 1 textbook in Kanji and Kana and Minna no Nihongo 1 translation and grammar notes throughout the course. However, please wait until the first session before buying your course book.

Who is this class for?

This level of Japanese is post-beginner, allowing you to extend your range of basic skills.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have already studied the Japanese language for approximately one year or 60 hours.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Japanese for about 80 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you have studied Japanese for about 100 hours.

  • experiences
  • possibility and capability

Grammar

You will learn:

  • verbs (nai form) and key patterns using verbs (nai form)
  • verbs (dictionary form) and key patterns using verbs (dictionary form)
  • verbs (ta form) and key patterns using verbs (ta form)

Term 3

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • writing a diary
  • personal history
  • giving opinions
  • giving directions

Grammar

You will learn:

  • polite style / plain style
  • noun modification
  • ‘when’ followed by verb (ta form) and ‘when’ followed by verb (dictionary form)
  • particle を + motion V
