Japanese – Evening Language Course

Would you like to learn Japanese in London? Join one of our part-time Japanese courses at our central London Regent Street Campus – just a few minutes' walk from Oxford Circus.

Our beginners’ Japanese courses (Grade 1) start in October and January. If you already have some knowledge of Japanese you can also join part 2 or part 3 of the Beginners’ Japanese (Grade 1) course.

We also have intermediate Japanese classes starting in October each year.

Who is this class for?

Japanese Beginners’ (Grade 1) is the first exposure to the language, allowing you to start to communicate.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have no or little previous knowledge of Japanese.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Japanese for about 20 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you have studied Japanese for about 40 hours.

Course content

Our Japanese lessons follow a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language you need to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.

Part 1

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • greetings
  • personal introductions (professions, ages, nationalities, countries)
  • Hiragana (Japanese alphabet)
  • numbers 0–100
  • time
  • telephone number

Grammar

You will learn:

  • demonstratives (kore, sore, are, kono, sono, ano, koko, soko, asako)
  • particles
  • verbs in the non­-past tense and past tense (okimasu, nemasu, benkyo shimasu, hatarakimasu, yasumimasu, owarimasu)

Part 2

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • daily activities
  • directions
  • descriptions of things
  • invitations
  • giving and receiving
  • shopping

Grammar

You will learn:

  • more verbs in the non-past and past tense
  • adjectives in the present tense
  • Katakana (Japanese alphabet)

Part 3

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • existence of things and people
  • places and locations
  • likes and dislikes
  • capability and ability
  • quantities and counting

Grammar

You will learn:

  • counters
  • particles が and は
  • expressions of frequency
  • expressions of duration

There may be slight content variations at the discretion of the tutor. We may, for example, include additional content when general progress is good, or vary content according to students' interests.

Learning resources

We will use Minna no Nihongo 1 textbook in Kanji and Kana and Minna no Nihongo 1 translation and grammar notes throughout the course. However, please wait until the first session before buying your course book.

Who is this class for?

This level of Japanese is post-beginner, allowing you to extend your range of basic skills.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have already studied the Japanese language for approximately one year or 60 hours.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Japanese for about 80 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you have studied Japanese for about 100 hours.

  • writing a diary

You will learn:

  • verb (dictionary form) and key patterns using verb (dictionary form)
  • verb (ta-form) and key patterns using verb (ta-form)
  • plain style

Term 3

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • personal history
  • giving opinions
  • giving directions
  • giving, receiving and expressing gratitude

Grammar

You will learn:

  • noun modification
  • conditional structures
  • when/if sentences
  • 'when' followed by a verb (ta-form) and 'when' followed by a verb (dictionary form)

Who is this class for?

You should have a good basic knowledge of the Japanese language and its grammar.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have already studied the Japanese language for approximately two years or 120 hours or equivalent.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Japanese for about 140 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if have studied Japanese for about 160 hours.

Part 2

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • mealtime conversations
  • describing what you do habitually
  • inviting somebody to do something with several reasons
  • talking about forgetting something
  • Kanji for JLPT n5 + part of n4

Grammar

You will learn:

  • expressing an action while simultaneously doing another action
  • describing habitual actions
  • listing reasons
  • expressing similarity
  • intransitive verbs
  • expressing the state of being
  • describing a state intentionally done by somebody
  • describing an action as a preparation
  • describing regret

Part 3

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • describing your future plans, intentions or schedule
  • giving advice
  • telling the meaning of road signs
  • conveying somebody’s messages to other people

Grammar

You will learn:

  • verbs in volitional form and a pattern using it
  • intention
  • giving advice using ​V ​た​form + ​ほうがいいです
  • expressing conjecture
  • verbs in the imperative form​
