Japanese – Evening Language Course

Would you like to learn Japanese in London? Join one of our part-time Japanese courses at our central London Regent Street Campus – just a few minutes' walk from Oxford Circus.

Our beginner Japanese courses start in October and January. If you already have some knowledge of Japanese you can also join part 2 or part 3 of the Beginner Japanese course.

We also have intermediate Japanese classes starting in October each year.

Who is this class for?

Japanese Beginner is the first exposure to the language, allowing you to start to communicate.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have no or little previous knowledge of Japanese.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Japanese for about 20 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you have studied Japanese for about 40 hours.


You can book:

  • each part individually for £235 (£260 after 25 March)*
  • Part 2 and 3 together for £400 (£445 after 25 March)*

*To book Parts 2 and 3 together, please proceed with booking Part 2 and add Parts 3 to your order when prompted during the checkout process. Please note that purchasing 2 parts equates to one single transaction.

Course content

Our Japanese lessons follow a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language you need to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.

Part 1


In this term, we will cover:

  • greetings
  • personal introductions (professions, ages, nationalities, countries)
  • Hiragana (Japanese alphabet)
  • numbers 0–100
  • telling the time
  • telephone number


You will learn:

  • demonstratives (kore, sore, are, kono, sono, ano, koko, soko, asako)
  • particles
  • verbs in the non-past tense and past tense (okimasu, nemasu, benkyo shimasu, hatarakimasu, yasumimasu, owarimasu)

Part 2


In this term, we will cover:

  • daily activities
  • directions
  • descriptions of things
  • invitations
  • giving and receiving
  • shopping


You will learn:

  • more verbs in the non-past and past tense
  • adjectives in the present tense
  • Katakana (Japanese alphabet)

Part 3


In this term, we will cover:

  • existence of things and people
  • places and locations
  • likes and dislikes
  • capability and ability
  • quantities and counting


You will learn:

  • counters
  • particles が and は
  • expressions of frequency
  • expressions of duration

There may be slight content variations at the discretion of the tutor. We may, for example, include additional content when general progress is good, or vary content according to students' interests.

Learning resources

We will use Minna no Nihongo 1 textbook in Kanji and Kana and Minna no Nihongo 1 translation and grammar notes throughout the course. However, please wait until the first session before buying your course book.
