Media Presence and Impact

This one-day, practical media skills workshop is designed to help you feel confident when interviewed by journalists, to understand what the media are interested in, why journalists might contact you and why you might want to contact them.
You will learn what print, radio and TV journalists want from interviewees, and how to answer questions in a concise and interesting way and handle difficult questions under pressure.
This media training course will explore how journalists work, how to create media opportunities and how to formulate messages that work. You will be interviewed by an experienced news and broadcast journalist, and work with expert journalist tutors to analyse and build on their performance, developing both the content of their message and style of their delivery.

You will receive advice on and practice in:
- handling interview requests
- tuning into the reporter’s agenda
- ensuring their agenda is covered
- matching their message to the medium
- preparing for interviews across different media
- mastering the 'soundbite'
You will be given practical experience of a:
- radio interview
- studio TV interview
- TV 'location' interview
- 'down-the-line' TV interview

Jane Wilton is an experienced communications consultant, facilitator and trainer. She began her career in BBC news and current affairs, and set up her own media and communication training company in 1996. She works with senior leaders across all sectors and has been devising and running courses for the University of Westminster since 2006. Her clients include The London Stock Exchange, Westminster Abbey, Historic Royal Palaces, Anglian Water and Visa International.
Janet Cohen is a highly experienced and award-winning broadcast journalist. She started in BBC local radio, going on to cover stories all over the world and interviewing many leading public figures. Most recently she was senior reporter and presenter for Radio 4’s The World Tonight. Her vast knowledge, gleaned during her time with BBC News and Current Affairs, informs her work as a highly effective media and communication skills tutor.
Michael Dodd is an international speaker and former Berlin and London correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He now works with leaders and professionals in all sectors to enable them to get their messages across. Michael’s clients include United Nations agencies, where he helps officials prepare to face tough media questioning on international issues. His book Great Answers to Tough Questions at Work is on the shortlist for The Commuter’s Read Management Book of the Year Award 2017.
Sally Feldman has held a series of senior positions in journalism, broadcasting and higher education, specialising in the creative industries. She has edited three women’s magazines, worked as a producer and edited BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour for 12 years. Sally works as a consultant at the University of Westminster, and as a media and personal presentation trainer. She writes and broadcasts regularly.
Kati Whitaker: After training as a lawyer, Kati worked as a local radio reporter before moving to BBC Radio 4 where she presented the weekly disability programme Does He Take Sugar for 10 years. She also worked as a reporter, presenter and newsreader for Radio 4’s The Sunday programme, BBC Breakfast, Sky and Channel 4 News. Today Kati has her own production company making documentaries for BBC Radio 4 and regularly leads media and presentation skills training courses.
