Course summary

Security is a vital aspect of any networked system, especially as the dependency on network infrastructures has grown over the past few decades. This course builds on more than ten years of experience in education in network designand support, and its aim is to produce network engineers with a strong background in security.

The course focuses on three main aspects – communication, network design and implementation, and security. You will develop the knowledge and technical expertise to be able to take on specific responsibility within a network team or as a team leader for the security aspects of that network, particularly in industries such as banking, where security is crucially important. Our graduates have also gone on to work for organisations such as BT, HP, Cisco, Dell, Google Enterprise, Huawei Technologies and Quinix, as well as for smaller private companies.

Westminster is a Cisco Networking Academy, and the course incorporates the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Security curriculum, giving you the opportunity to complete the CCNA Security qualification while studying for your degree.

You will learn the fundamental principles of computing and network engineering, and develop the connection between these and a broad range of network systems (with special emphasis placed on the optimisation of converged networks).

You will also be encouraged to use initiative and confidence in approaching engineering problems, investigating solutions using a blend of analytical and practical skills.

You will be able to take a year-long industry placement between Years 2 and 3, giving you a competitive edge in the job market and contributing to your development towards Chartered Engineer status.

Teaching methods include lectures and seminars, laboratories and computer-aided engineering, group and individual projects, and online learning. Assessments include formal exams, group work, written reports, and presentations and posters.

Credit Level 5

Industrial placement year

You will have the opportunity to take a placement in industry between Years 2 and 3. This gives you practical experience in the workplace and a competitive edge in the job market. It also contributes to your professional development towards Chartered Engineer status.

The network theme is further advanced and the issues of implementation, configuration and dealing with present day data streams (such as for multimedia applications) are addressed. There are specialist modules on planning and implementing secure systems, and on working on projects in an industrial environment, which will prepare you to analyse requirements, and design and implement a secure network system. You will also complete a major project involving these aspects.

Credit Level 6

Professional accreditation

This course is accredited by the Engineering Council and the British Computer Society (BCS). This entitles you to become a Chartered Engineer, after a period of experience.

Entry Requirements

Typical offer

One of the following (or an equivalent qualification):

  • A levels – BCC/A*A to include at least one technical subject
  • International Baccalaureate – 26 points including 5 in a Higher Level technical subject
  • Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended National Diploma/National Diploma – DMM/D*D* in Engineering, ICT or Computing, to include Maths at Level 3
  • Access to HE Diploma – Pass in Engineering with 45 credits at Level 3 with a minimum of 27 Level 3 credits at Merit or Distinction

In addition to one of the above, you should have:

  • GCSEs – minimum grade 4 in Maths and English (Grade C in grading system prior to 2017). Please note that Functional Skills qualifications are not accepted.
