Nursery Schools and Early Years Policy in England: The State of Play
British Academy Small Research Grants
This research examines the purpose and value of nursery school education in the context of the problems with finding a sustainable funding solution. How can maintained nursery schools continue to provide high quality early education? The project involves interviews with twenty nursery school head teachers and classroom teachers across England and seeks to understand how teachers conceive of 'quality' early years education.
The research critically examines the concept of 'quality' in early years policy discourse. The research seeks to draw attention to the underfunding of nursery schools in England and the need to focus on how to achieve universal high quality early education provision that is accessible for every child.
