Waste

Waste Management

Waste Management is managed through applying the Waste Hierarchy, with preventing waste in the first place as the most favourable option to disposal at landfill sites the least favourable. Read the University's Waste Management operational procedure (PDF) and Waste Policy (PDF). Our main waste partner is Suez who send almost nothing to landfill.

Re-Use

Towards the end of the term, the University requests charities to collect re-usable goods left by residents who no longer need them.

If you live in halls of residence and would like to sign up as a reuse coordinator, please let us know by emailing [email protected]

Where feasible, the University attempts to purchase remanufactured furniture and reuse University furniture.

The University’s Green Impact project encourages teams of staff across the University to engage in a variety of reuse actions within departments.

If you are a member of staff or student, and would like to get involved with Green Impact, get in touch with us on [email protected].

Recycle

The University recycles nearly  50% of waste generated on site.

Within university buildings, you will find recycling stations containing one mixed recycling bin and one general waste bin.

At university recycling stations you can recycle:

At the University stations you cannot recycle:

Important: Any items under the “you can’t recycle” section above are considered to be contamination. Serious levels of contamination can result in the whole recycling bin going to landfill.

Please take particular care not to put coffee cups and food into the mixed recycling bins. We will soon be able to recycle coffee cups seperately.

Recover

Food waste from catering is also recycled and made into compost. This helps the University divert more than 20 tonnes of waste from landfill.
