About me
Omar Phoenix Khan is a Lecturer in the Criminology Department and a PhD candidate.
He has previously worked as Head of Equality & Diversity in prisons in London and has led programmes for international NGOs including Penal Reform International, focusing on projects to reduce mass incarceration and increase the use of alternatives to prison across Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania.
Omar also is an international criminal justice consultant via Justice Focus and has completed reports on gender-sensitivity in probation in Kenya & diversion of juveniles for UNICEF in Zimbabwe. Omar has also given training on United Nations standards such as the Nelson Mandela Rules & the Bangkok Rules.
Omar also produces and hosts the Criminology Podcast Justice Focus.

Research
His research, from a critical perspective, focuses on coloniality of justice, specifically seeking to understand judicial decision-making at the pre-trial stage in Brazil. Omar also works on gender-responsive projects within criminal justice settings and has previously worked in UK prisons, as well as for international NGOs and as a consultant on several UN projects.
