About me

I joined the University staff in 1994 initially holding a joint post as research assistant and lecturer, becoming a full time senior lecture in 1998. My initial training in architecture was followed by practice in Australia then Italy and the UK where I moved in 1998. During that time I became interested in urban history and development, which led to study, then practice in urban design. I also completed an MSc Architecture: Computing and Design. By 1993 I was working as a freelance urban designer and started teaching as a part time lecturer.

Teaching

Since 1995 I have been the course leader for the MA Urban Design Programme and much of my teaching is on that course. However I also contribute to others; from 2001-2005 I ran an urban design studio on BArch course and I now contribute to several modules on MA Urban and Regional Planning. Much of my teaching revolves around studio based design projects. In recent years I have been involved with training and professional development, designing and delivering courses and workshops for external bodies.

Research

My initial research activity examined city identity and marketing. My key interest is in urban growth and in particular modeling informal settlements. This led to a collaboration with the Max Lock Centre studying slum areas in India and Africa with a focus on how communities manage shared resources. My current work looks at the development of cites is ancient times, in particular Amarna in Egypt. I have a strong interest in innovative approaches to learning and have been involved in researching improvements in teaching practice such the use of technology in teaching built environment professionals. In recent years my focus has moved to knowledge transfer rather than research. I have devised and delivered programmes workshops for external bodies including CABE, Urban Design London, various Local Authorities and consultancies.
