What sort of business placement can students carry out?
All Westminster Business School undergraduates have the option to undertake a 12 month, full-time business placement as part of their course after the successful completion of their second year. Students usually secure a placement relevant to their degree course, allowing them to put into practice the theoretical knowledge they have gained at university. In the past, our students have undertaken placements in accounting, finance, human resources, information technology, public relations, sales and marketing.
How much should I pay my students?
Salaries for placement students range from £14,000 to £19,000 depending on the industry and the kind of work involved.
How can I raise my organisation's profile on campus?
Twice a year we hold careers fairs for students, where you can have a stand to promote your company's opportunities and target students. You can also give presentations on campus to raise student's awareness of your company. Through the use of a new interactive online work-based learning platform, we will be encouraging employers to engage with students, tutors and other businesses by contributing to regular blogging and information sharing on the web.
How should the placement be structured?
- 48-52 week full-time placement
- Starting between June and September
- Paid national minimum wage or above
Ideally a student should be treated in the same way as any other employee and should adhere to the same terms and conditions. However, it is important to remember that the student is going through a learning process. The student will need to receive sufficient training at the start of their placement and the supervisor should meet with the student at regular intervals to discuss their progress.
How will the University support the student during their placement?
During their placement year our students will need to complete a project relating to their placement. An allocated tutor will visit the student focus on supporting them with their project. During the visits, staff will also meet with the student's supervisor in the company to discuss their progress and any other issues that may arise. A member of the Business Experience Team may then conduct a second visit or telephone call. In addition, you can contact the BET at any time during the placement.
What happens once the placement has been completed?
You may find that the placement student has skills that you require on a full-time basis. Many of our placement students are lucky enough to be employed by their placement employer after graduation. If you require another placement student we can once again advertise the vacancy for you.
