Schools Biomedical Taster Sessions

Secondary school students and academic staff at the science taster session

We welcomed 10 school students who were in school years 10, 11 and 12 from schools across North, West London and Hertfordshire to our laboratories. The worked with several academics and were assisted by technical staff and level 5 Biomedical Sciences students.

The academics involved included Miriam Dwek, Dr Zariwala (obesity and metabolism), Mrs D'Souza (blood sciences) and Dr Carly Wood (physiology and exercise). The students studied cancer cells and malaria under the microscope and undertook physiological measurements following exercise and aseptic cell culture. They also learnt about the Ebola Check test equipment from Dr Moschos.

The feedback from the students was excellent and they would all recommend the course to their friends.

Some of their comments: "This was a great course, good experience", "Thanks I really enjoyed myself and learnt a lot", "Everyone was really nice", "The course has helped me decide what I would like to study at university", “Thank you for such a great week”.

We very much look forward to running another course of its type next year and to welcoming the next cohort of students to our laboratories.
