Contemporary Media Practice BA Honours- 2014

All of the skills I learnt at University of Westminster were extremely valuable. Contemporary Media Practice (CMP) was an extremely diverse course and it suits my role perfectly. My role is diverse and adaptable and there’s never one day the same.

What are you doing now?

Hi-Impact specialises in curriculum and technical support for schools. At Hi-Impact, my main role is to teach kids across the country how to code and programme robots. I run creative coding workshops bringing art and coding together using Arduino. I am also working in the media department doing photography, video and print/web design. My main role at Hi-Impact is to bring new ideas to the table.

What did you find most valuable about your course at Westminster? How did the skills you learnt during your degree help you to shape your career?

All of the skills I learnt at the University of Westminster were extremely valuable. Contemporary Media Practice (CMP) was an extremely diverse course and it suits my role perfectly. My role is diverse and adaptable and there’s never one day the same. One day I could be in Jersey teaching programming, the next I could be at The Science Museum meeting their outreach managers creating digital badges to go alongside the launch of astronaut Tim Peake.

What was the best thing about being a student in London?

London is completely different to anywhere else in the UK. It allowed me to fully embrace the culture and explore art on different days.

What extra-curricular activities did you participate in that enhanced your time at the University?

I did a lot of work throughout my time at university. Whilst most of it was at the local bar, I also worked for Applause Store Productions as an audience manager on shows such as Big Brother, Celebrity Juice and X Factor for 3 years. I also did several internships such as working at Done and Dusted Productions doing research for The MOBO Awards and Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing a similar career?

I would encourage them to try as many different things as possible. It is great to be specialised in one area, but in the technology industry nowadays, it is vital that you are adaptable and have a large range of skills to offer. Also, a sense of humour and a drive to work hard go an awful long way. Don't do something if you don't absolutely love it.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself, your achievements, life experiences, what inspires you, or career that may be valuable/interesting to our prospective students or alumni?

Since working at Hi-Impact, I have had many great opportunities to work on projects such as being part of the media team for Island Games Jersey, and I have also been involved in many projects, including sending weather balloons into space with go pros attached to take pictures of Earth from space and collect data. Hi-Impact won Best Creative Business at The Merseyside Independent Business awards 2015.
