Dr Athena Foran
Subject of study: BSc Psychology
Year of graduation: 2011
Current position: Specialist Psychologist, NHS
What are you doing now?
I work as a specialist counselling psychologist in an NHS weight management service assessing patients for weight loss surgery and providing psychological interventions. I also work privately specialising in all eating disorders – ranging from anorexia to binge eating disorder.
What did you find most valuable about your course at Westminster? How did the skills you learnt during your degree help you to shape your career?
The most valuable part of the course was my extremely supportive supervisor who inspired me to do research! It really propelled and encouraged me into further education – I went on to do an MSc and Doctorate in Psychology.
What extra-curricular activities did you participate in that enhanced your time at the University?
Not much unfortunately. If I had the opportunity to do it again I would have done a placement year.
What advice would you give to someone thinking for pursuing a similar career?
Consider doing a placement year and get as much experience as you possibly can!
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
Thanks to my incredible supervisor at Westminster – Dr Viren Swami, my research was published at undergraduate level which was an incredible accomplishment for me and really helped me with future research opportunities.
