London is a city of opportunities! You can study, work and entertain yourself. You can network with professionals by attending business events, open door days in companies you would like to work for! Meet people, make connections.

What are you doing now?

I am working as an Information Security Analyst at Colt Technology Services. The job includes but not limited to performing risk analysis, gap assessments, maintaining a risk register for networks, maintaining risk treatment plans, managing vulnerabilities to our networks, mitigating risks, building up security reports, implementing security measures and controls, preparing company for the ISO 27001 audit.

What did you find most valuable about your course at Westminster? How did the skills you learnt during your degree help you to shape your career?

The most valuable were the tutors. They gave us insight into the professional field from a practical point of view. Theory is important, but knowing what you can face in real life helps you to have a realistic picture of the profession you’ve chosen. Currently, I’m using those skills on a daily basis. As an advantage, as Information Security is a really big field, it gave me an opportunity to see which area I’m interested in most.

What was the best thing about being a student in London?

In terms of studying, the best one was having international classmates. That gave me an opportunity to know how information security works in different countries.

Overall, studying in London is one of the best things that ever happened to me.

What extra-curricular activities did you participate in that enhanced your time at the University?

At the beginning I was more into spending free time, discovering London as it was my first time there and I didn’t know if ever will come back. Later on, I had a part-time job just to get some spare cash.

Additionally, I took the opportunity to gain some extra certificates, like Business Management in CMI and Security Supervision. I was also attending business events, where the biggest one was Infosec Europe – a must-go for all security professionals.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing a similar career?

Make sure you keep up to speed with all of the technologies coming up, new security solutions, new possible threats etc. Keep your awareness high enough. Otherwise, having a 1–2 years gap can possibly slow your career down a bit. Never think you know enough to do your job. There is always room for improvement and always something new and interesting to learn! Try to find a mentor who would guide you through the path.

Why would you recommend Westminster as a place to study?

Tutors are great and I think they are the biggest asset of Westminster.

Very professional, friendly, helpful, and with a sense of humour. The admin staff keeps the same high level which makes life in University much easier.

Additionally, the facilities in place. Big variety of devices, equipment, resources to get the most of studying.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?

Those of you who’ll get what they want promptly, appreciate that but do not relax. For those, who are less fortunate, never give up and never put your hands down. There is a world of opportunities for you but probably not opened yet for now. Just keep going, be proactive and you’ll get what you are aiming for at some point. Lastly, never compare yourself with others. Everyone has their own path.
