Founding Director | Web Structures PTE Ltd

PhD in Structural Engineering- 1985

The exposure I gained while doing my PhD at Westminster (then the Polytechnic of Central London) proved invaluable to me throughout my professional and academic career.

What are you doing now?

I am the founding director of Web Structures in Singapore, with offices in Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and London too.

I teach on a part-time basis at the National University of Singapore, as well as at the Singapore University of Design and Technology. I have supervised a master's student at the Politecnico Di Milano too.

What did you find most valuable about your course at Westminster? How did the skills you learnt during your degree help you to shape your career?

The exposure I gained while doing my PhD at Westminster (then the Polytechnic of Central London) proved invaluable to me throughout my professional and academic career.

Why would you recommend Westminster as a place to study?

The size and reach of Westminster is very useful. The extensive facilities and high level of teaching staff are also noteworthy.

What was the best thing about being a student in London?

The best thing was the accessibility of the place in central London.

I was lucky to be able to balance the very good location at Marylebone Road with a cost-effective accommodation not that far away, which helped in saving cost and time.

What extra-curricular activities did you participate in that enhanced your time at the University?

Most of my time was spent in the laboratory, my office and the library in pursuit of my PhD work.

I did take part in some sports activities too, mainly volleyball at Regent Street campus.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing a similar career?

I am very happy and satisfied I chose the subject that I chose, and the supervisor I had on my PhD thesis (Professor Paul Regan), who was and remains one of the most respectable icons of the subject globally. My advice to the younger generation is to choose a subject which is relevant and which they are passionate about and to pursue it.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?

My research work has generated a number of technical papers the Structural Engineer (UK), the American Concrete Institute Journal and the Journal of the Singapore Institute of Architects. I have been on the Master Jury of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in its 13th cycle in 2016. I am also the first and only engineer to receive the coveted title of 'Designer of the Year' from the President of Singapore in 2016 under President’s Design Award.
