Getting by

Mind the gap

Moving away from home is a big deal. The transition from living with your parents to living in London is exciting, challenging and fun. But there’s a lot to learn before you can actually call yourself a Londoner. Your journey begins here.

Getting around

One of the first things to do is get an Oyster card. You can top it up online, at stations, or in newsagents where you see the Oyster pre-pay symbol. It works out much cheaper than paying for travel cards and single journeys.

Instead of automatically jumping on the tube, make sure you check out your local bus routes first. A single bus journey costs just £1.30 when you use your Oyster card and it’s a brilliant way of getting to know the city above ground.

Make sure you apply for a student Oyster Card too – you could save as much as 33% on fares.

For information on routes, discounts, passes and planned closures make sure you check out the Transport for London website. Their journey planner will probably become one of your most visited pages – bookmark it today.

On your bike

Cycling can save you a small fortune. There are plenty of cycle paths in case you’re worried about safety or getting lost. Don’t have a bike? Register with Barclays Cycle Hire, or Boris Bikes as they are sometimes known, and you can hop on and off at handy locations across the city.
