Outside insight shadowing scheme

Human Resources Development is launching a new initiative that promotes learning and growth for professional support staff. Development experts from eight universities in London have created a partnership work shadowing scheme. It entails spending time and observing the work of another member of staff in a department or role of interest in order to gain insight into their work. Outside Insight shadowing provides practical career and professional development through sharing best practices and encouraging networking within Higher Education.

The shadowing can last from a minimum of half-day to a maximum of 3 days. There are no start and end dates for this initiative so the days can be arranged, by mutual agreement, at any time throughout the year.

Partners

Eight universities are taking part in the first stage of the initiative:

  • East London University
  • Goldsmiths College
  • University of Greenwich
  • Imperial College
  • Institute of Education, University of London
  • Middlesex University
  • University of Roehampton
  • University of Westminster

Benefits

  • Provides a fresh perspective and greater insight into roles, departments, ways of working and institutions
  • Promotes the sharing of knowledge, good practice and networking opportunities
  • Gives an opportunity to reflect on own work practices and highlight areas for change
  • Allows staff to compare leadership styles, procedures, systems and organisational structures
  • Enhances career progression – spending time with a professional at the next level up will give a deeper understanding of the skills, knowledge and experience required for that role

Eligibility

The scheme is open to all professional support staff at University of Westminster although the places are limited. Staff must have passed their probationary period before applying to shadow someone or to be shadowed and must obtain their line manager’s agreement for participation before submitting their applications.
