Olympic Games impact on staff

Millions of people will be coming to London to experience the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Public transport and roads will need to operate differently.

Follow this link Get ahead of the games to access a website developed by Transport for London to provide you with the information you need to understand where and when travel will be affected, consider all your travel options and plan your travel during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Help us in supporting you

In order to get a picture of how many staff members will be affected and how we can best support our staff, we kindly ask you to complete the TFL Travel Survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/UniWestminster

You will be asked to review your journey and work plans with your line manager in the new year.

We are working in consultation with Transport for London to develop a Games time Travel Action Plan. A Travel Adviser has been appointed to work with us for up to 6 consultation days to look at how or if we can:

  • Reduce travel to our sites by encouraging remote and home working and annual leave during this time
  • Re-time journeys away from the predicted increased transport demand
  • Revising the method of transport – for example, could certain members of staff walk all or part of their journey to work rather than use the tube; and
  • Re-routing – developing information strategies designed to influence staff away from the main, predicted transport ‘hotspots’. Hotspots are transport hubs which are predicted to be particularly challenged at Games time in terms of demand exceeding supply.

Travel during the Games

There will be a direct impact on the Jubilee, Central, District and Hammersmith and City lines due to Stratford and West Ham stations providing access to the Olympic Park. However the whole network is likely to be effected at various times due to there being Olympic venues across the Capital. A number of stations, both Tube and National Rail have been identified as travel hotspots.

When is it happening?

The Olympics will be taking place from 27 July to 12 August and the Paralympics from 29 August to 9 September. It has been predicted that there will be disruptions in travel from week commencing 16 July.

How to prepare

You will be contacted by your line manager to record and review your journey to the University ahead of the Games period looking at a variety of options:

  • Personalised travel planning (alternate route options)
  • Alternative methods (cycle, walk)
  • Flexible working times
  • Working from home

Deliveries

To avoid disruption the University is working with its suppliers to ensure we are able to receive deliveries during the Games period. This will include reducing, revising, re-routing and re-timing deliveries to try and avoid peak times.

Security

The University is working with CIS Security to ensure business as usual for our staff, students, visitors and neighbours during the Game period.
