Summary
Research within this group explores the role of cell communication in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. A multidisciplinary approach is used to investigate cellular adaptation and differentiation in response to both physiological and pathophysiological stimuli.
In mammalian systems, communication includes a variety of cellular processes including reproduction, stem cell biology and iron homeostasis.
- Research programmes in the area of reproduction include the hypothalamic control of the reproductive axis and the role of hypoxia in the ovarian follicle development.
- Studies of stem cell differentiation and endothelial function have concentrated on the role of nitric oxide signalling, with a current emphasis on the identification of novel signalling molecules involved in these processes.
- Other studies by the group are directed towards understanding the mode of action of the hormone hepcidin in iron homeostatsis as well as the physiological and pathophysiological regulation of the inflammatory responses.
Further interests within the group extend to Quorum-sensing in organisms such as Aspergillus.
