Research Statement
The mobile-mentary is an experiment in cinematic communication. The city film production is exploring Japanese metropolitan centres through the lens of a mobile phone. The mobile-mentary (mobile documentary) project examines the impact of mobile phones on the transforming mediascape, focusing on the convergence of communication technologies with lens-based media. The practice-led research project investigates how the mobile-mentaries contribute to and extend the definition of documentary theory and practice. The objective of the mobile-mentary (mobile documentary) project is to create and formulate a new visual aesthetic for small screen productions and proliferate an alternative mode of documentary filmmaking.
In 309 Regent Street, the site of the University of Westminster, the first ever cinema screening of the Lumire Brothers in Great Britain was hosted in 1896. Now the mobile-mentary research project will illuminate the process of mobile filmmaking and distribution via Bluetooth technology.
Max Schleser is organising the international FILMOBILE conference and exhibition, which is scheduled to take place in London in April 2008. FILMOBILE is a project which aims to create a dialogue between the industry, filmmakers and artists working with mobile devices through a variety of on and off line events.
