Arab Media Centre
The Arab Media Centre conducts, promotes and disseminates high quality, up-to-date scholarly research on Arab media and culture. It was launched in 2006 as part of the University of Westminster's Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI), as a logical next step after an ESRC-funded international seminar series in 2003-05 had established CAMRI as the UK's leading academic centre for Arab media research and attracted funding awards from the Research Councils-UK and Higher Education Innovation Fund. In its 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the UK’s Higher Education Funding Council ranked CAMRI as the best media and communication research centre in the country, with all of its submissions rated as being of international standard, including 60 per cent classified as ‘world leading’ and a further 30 per cent as ‘internationally excellent’.
Through lecture series, seminars, international workshops and full-scale conferences, the Arab Media Centre creates a rich environment for postgraduate and post-doctoral research on Arab media. It has links with media departments at universities across the Arab world, in Cairo, Beirut, Dubai, Riyadh and elsewhere. The Centre nurtures an international network of specialists in the field and provides a forum for cross-border interpersonal and inter-institutional exchange among media researchers, media practitioners, policy-makers and advocates who share an interest in media that is Arab-owned and/or reaches Arabic-speaking audiences in the Arab region and across the world.
