Professional Courses

The Department of Professional Legal Studies

We run a popular 1 year full time day Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) course and a 2 year part time evening GDL. This enables non-law graduates to move on to qualifying as solicitors via the LPC or barristers via the Bar Vocational course (BVC).

We run a 1 year full time day LPC and a 2 year part time evening LPC. The course is now divided into Stage 1 (the core subjects) and Stage 2 (the electives). Stages 1 and 2 back be taken back-to-back or you can take Stage 1 and take Stage 2 later on. You can even take the stages at different course providers. You might like to check out our very interesting range of electives offered at Stage 2.

In September 2009, we introduced a new flexible part-time Legal Practice Course (LPC distance learning and weekend classes) in association with Central Law Training and the University of West of England. Click here for more details.

You can add a masters in Legal Practice to your LPC by taking a one-year add on course.

Finally you should note that the Law School is introducing a 4 year exempting law degree that is specifically geared to professional practice in a law firm with fees that are consistent throughout the course, rather than nearly tripling at the LPC stage.

Our Facilities

The Law School is located in a historic building in Little Titchfield Street London W1, just behind Upper Regent Street. The closest tube station is Oxford Circus which is a 5 minute walk away. This has a grand and marbled entrance that has been preserved whilst the rest of the building has been fully refurbished to provide modern teaching and learning accommodation. We have up to the minute teaching and computing facilities that clearly enhance the student experience of teaching, learning and research. There is a large law library on three floors of the building and two court rooms for advocacy and mooting exercises.

The LPC has a dedicated suite on the third floor with 6 groupwork rooms and a fully equipped lecture theatre. All rooms have electronic SmartBoards, and are wi-fi and PC networked. There is a fully developed and dedicated audio-video suite on the 4th floor that allows students to practice their oral skills and where skills assessments are recorded on video, e.g. the legal skill of interviewing.

The LPC Resource Room is a dedicated LPC facility for LPC students. It contains practitioner texts, periodicals and statutory materials as well as works of reference with photocopier and three dedicated LPC Administrators. To find out more about either the GDL or LPC course, please contact the LPC Admissions Office.
