About Us
Welcome from the Dean
Thank you for your interest in the University of Westminster School of Law. Our website aims to provide information about the range of courses currently offered by the Law School located in Central London. Our taught courses range from undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and research degrees. In addition, we offer conversion courses for non-law graduates wishing to embark upon a career in law.
As well as being a top-rated school for research, the faculty is also known for its friendly approach to teaching and learning and offers students a high degree of personal attention. The School uses small group work wherever possible and provides individual supervision for project work.
The Law School has three departments. The Department of Advanced Legal Studies is responsible for PhD and Masters programmes, The Department of Professional Legal Studies is responsible for the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and The Department of Academic Legal Studies is responsible for the LLB and ILEX course.
As well as the general resources provided by the University of Westminster and the Law School, students in the Department of Advanced Legal Studies Legal Studies and Department of Professional Legal Studies have access to dedicated computing facilities and common rooms. There is an on-site library containing a wealth of legal and social science materials, a skills suite and mock courtroom. The library provides a visually attractive study environment and there is access to a range of electronic resources. The Law School building is within easy reach of additional student recreation facilities in Regent Street and Wells Street. The School has good access to international research materials.
Most staff engage in research and publication. Staff in Professional Legal Studies produce well known practitioner texts. More generally, the School has an international reputation in international and comparative law, socio-legal research and international commercia and financial law. In the Research Assessment Exercise 2001 the School was awarded 5, one of the top classifications.
The most significant indication of the quality of the teaching provided by the Law School is the continuing success of our former students. Large numbers of our graduates enter the legal profession and many are highly successful. Our alumni includes presidents of the Law Society, judges and QCs, as well as young lawyers or barristers of the year. In 2006 alone, eight former students became QCs others, often our Masters and PhD students, have chosen careers in international tribunal and commercial institutions or as academics, We are rightly proud of all our former students, and keep in touch with them through an active (Alumni Association.)
The Schools has extensive links with institutions and professional contacts throughout the world. Support for international students is available through our (International Education Office) and International Student Officer. The University has good quality (Halls of Residence) in attractive locations close to its campuses.
