Ministry of Defence Languages Examination Board
Who we are
The University of Westminster provides examinations for all UK forces personnel who undergo defence language training. The University runs a joint board with the Ministry of Defence Languages Examination Board (MODLEB). We have been working in partnership with the MOD for more than ten years. Representatives from the MOD attend all examination setting, moderation and policy boards so as to ensure the validity and authenticity of the examination system. All examination papers are subject to approval by the MOD prior to being used.
The UOW MODLEB office is an integral part of the Diplomatic Academy of London, which itself is part of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities.
What we do
Foreign languages
We provide bilingual language examinations set at NATO STANAG levels SLP 1 (Survival), SLP 2 (Functional), SLP 3 (Advanced Certificate) and SLP 4 (Diploma) in all languages requested by the MOD. In practice this is approximately 47 languages.
Candidates who successfully complete the Diploma may enrol on the MA degree in International Liaison and Communication (MA ILC) at the Diplomatic Academy of London.
In addition, the UOW MODLEB office provides testing of civilian interpreters who will be deployed as military interpreters in a peacekeeping environment.
Military English
We also conduct military English language testing for foreign Ministries of Defence.
We are able to deliver tailor-made short military English courses to meet the specific needs of the client.
We can design courses for foreign military students or trainers who require military English.
Quality Assurance
We are able to provide quality assurance of any military language training process.
