Institute for Modern and Contemporary Culture
Welcome to the Institute for Modern and Contemporary Culture at the University of Westminster, London.
The Institute is an interdisciplinary research environment for advanced study in the arts, humanities, and cultural institutions, based in the heart of London, the world’s most intense and inspiring metropolis.
Hosted by the School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Languages (SSHL), the Institute brings together creative, critical, and committed researchers and postgraduate students from around the world, and functions as a community for its students and the staff affiliated with it, as well as a hub for both cross-School collaboration and external partnerships.
The Institute draws on staff – academics, artists, curators, architects, authors, cultural consultants, and museum professionals – from across the University, who possess research expertise in a range of different transdisciplinary fields relating to the critical study of modern and contemporary cultures. We work with a number of international visiting research fellows, among them curators at major galleries in North America and Europe, as well as world-leading writers and artists, and further coordinate a series of ongoing collaborative projects with cultural institutions such as the Tate and the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC.
The IMCC contributes to a number of postgraduate courses, which immerse students in the literary, visual, and architectural culture of the city. Our MA and PhD programmes are intellectually ambitious, perfect for aspiring academics and researchers, and are also geared towards preparing students professionally for life beyond university, especially for those hoping for careers in the media, creative, and culture industries.
A number of conferences and colloquia are programmed every year. 2009-10 includes events on ‘Archives', ‘Hope’, ‘The Future’, ‘Ezra Pound and Modern Criticism’, ‘Surrealism, Post-War Theory and the Avant-Garde’, and ‘Visual Culture Studies in Europe’. These events take place both on-site at the University, and also at significant London venues such as Tate Britain, The National Portrait Gallery, and The Whitechapel Gallery.
