English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies

Welcome to the Department of English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies. The Department houses a range of different courses in English Literature, English Language, Linguistics, Creative Writing, Visual Culture, Cultural and Critical Studies, and London Studies. We teach students at all levels from pre-degree through undergraduate work to MA and PhD, and students are also able to combine subjects with those taught in Social and Historical Studies, Politics and International Relations and Modern Languages. On this site you will find information about the activities of our department, including staff details and information on undergraduate and postgraduate courses as well as on research.

As a Department, we make the most of our central London location, organising regular public events with institutions such as Tate Britain and the National Portrait Gallery. English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies also makes a major contribution to the University's Study Abroad and European Exchange programmes, with over 200 international students attending its classes each year. The Department is additionally responsible for the Westminster/ Smithsonian Colloquium, a collaboration of lectures, workshops and seminars between the University and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, the world's largest museum complex.
