This is an interdisciplinary course covering the topics required for a career in Internet broadcasting as well as the conventional broadcasting industry. It develops your skills in electronics, multimedia development tools, networks, video editing and broadcast engineering.

Course Content

Practical learning plays an important part in this course with hands-on experience of web and video production, digital electronic design and animation. At Year 3 (Credit Level 6) you take on an individual project of your choice. From Year 2 (Credit Level 5) you can choose between a communications pathway which centres on communication networks, or a 3D graphics pathway which develops your skills in 3D animation.

Being used by media companies, such as digital television and digital audio broadcasting.

The course has been developed with input from the BBC and Channel 4, and one option at Year 2 (Credit Level 5) is delivered by the BBC training centre, allowing hands-on access to state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment.

Year 1 (Credit Level 4)

Communications pathway: Communications systems

3D Graphics pathway: Introduction to 3D graphics

* These subjects are taught as group projects.

Communications pathway: Cellular Radio Networks or Mobile Radio Systems

Sandwich placement year

A one-year placement in industry can be taken between Year 2 and Year 3 (Credit Levels 5 and 6). This gives you practical experience in the workplace and a competitive edge in the job market. It contributes to your professional development towards Incorporated Engineer status

Teaching and Assessment

You will receive advice and support from supervisors and other members of staff, all of whom are available to help you achieve your aims and get the most out of your education.

Associated Careers

There are excellent opportunities for you to find employment in the broadcasting and expanding Internet broadcasting industries requiring a multi-skilled engineer able to handle both technical and production roles. This degree was designed with the direct input of major employers such as the BBC and Channel 4.

Professional recognition:

This courses is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). This entitles you, after a period of experience, to become an Incorporated Engineer.

  • Advanced Diploma Grade C in IT or Engineering and relevant ASL at Grade C
