About the school
Courses
The School of Electronics and Computer Science offers programmes of study and research ranging from electronic engineering and computer science, to applied mathematics.
We offer both mainstream and specialist, undergraduate and postgraduate courses that are designed to meet both the career and personal aspirations of our students. Our state-of-the-art short courses and continual professional development (CPD) programmes directly serve the evolving needs of industry.
Research
Staff in the School are based in 6 specialist departments, they are leaders in their subject area, and are experienced in the technologies and applications within their field. The majority of our staff undertake academic research in their subject and also participate in research and technical development programmes in collaboration with industry. They also support highly focussed knowledge transfer programmes to directly support small and medium-sized companies with their technical business development needs.
Students
The needs of students are a high priority for the School. All our courses are modular, offering flexibility for those wishing to switch between full-time and part-time study, or allowing students to customise their programme of study. All courses on offer are vocational, leading to highly rewarding employment in industries operating at the leading edge of technology and application of ICT. Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and can enter programmes at different levels of study, depending on their prior learning, for example through foundation programmes. Some courses are offered through our partner institutions overseas.
Careers
Our courses prepare students for professional working life, and provide graduates with technical knowledge and practical skills that meet the needs of industry, research or further study. Our courses address the fundamental principles, technologies and processes, and their application to the solution of practical problems, through the design, construction, maintenance and disposal of ICT artefacts. They also provide students with an appreciation of the relevance of electronic engineering, mathematics and computer science to industry and society at large.
Courses in the School of Electronics and Computer Science provide comprehensive coverage of the subject of informatics (electronic and software engineering, network computing, information systems and applied mathematics) and its application to engineering, business, and the creative industries. The curriculum is up to date with current trends in industry, business and the modern global economy and it evolves continuously as technology changes, to fit the professional needs of students.
