Human Resource Management (HRM)
The Department of Human Resource Management (HRM) is a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development approved Centre of Excellence.
The HRM academic staff includes Professors in Organisation Studies and Enterprise Studies and a Reader in European Employee Relations. There is a strong combination of academic lecturing background and specialist experiences in industry suitable for delivering learning outcomes in applied aspects of human resource management.
The emphasis in teaching is on blending theory and practice. Attention is drawn to the importance of diagnosing the causes of problems when ascertaining the most appropriate managerial tools to implement in any given situation.
Many of the students are studying part-time and have experience in industry. Classes are therefore often run on a workshop basis, giving the opportunity to discuss the real-world application of theories. This also gives the opportunity for participants to feed in their expertise, thus creating a mutually-supportive learning environment.
Courses are run at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The specialist areas covered by the Department include Management Development, International Personnel Management, Reward Management, Employment Law, Assessment Centres, Psychological Testing, International Employee Relations, Managing Culture and Change, and Employee Counselling.
