Biography
Bill Hollins left school at the age of 16 and then completed an Indenture Engineering Apprenticeship. At the age of 22 he went to Sussex University and having completed his BSc, he returned to industry. Bill eventually became Director and Chief Designer for Castell Safety International. He then left to research for a PhD. This was one of the first in Design Management. In 1988 Bill started at Westminster Business School and he is a Principal Lecturer (Fractional post) in BIMO. He has also worked in various universities and in 25 countries.Teaching
During his years at the University of Westminster, Bill has written and presented many modules to undergraduates and postgraduates. He has supervised and examined research up to and including PhD. He teaches Design Management, Operations Management and Marketing.
Consultancy and professional practice
In 1985 Bill started a consultancy called Direction Consultants with his wife, specialising in improving design processes down to the concept stage. Most of the work is with the service. His main work is with Cool-Logistics who operate in the field of pharmaceutical packaging, certification and distribution. He helped start this company in 2000 and it is now the biggest in its market in Europe.Bill instigated and chaired the British Standard Guide to Managing the Design of Services and has been involved in all design management British Standards.
He developed and maintained the Design Council Knowledge Base web resource on service design. Bill is recognised as being a world authority on Design Management and Service Design and in 2009 he presented keynote speaches in Korea, China and Australia.
