Transport and Logistics
Within this subject area we bring together the research activities, and Masters’ teaching, in transport and in logistics.
Research and related teaching ranges across all the main modes of land and air transport, from the micro to the global scales, and from conceptual to applied studies. It encompasses freight and aviation modes, as well personal travel by passenger transport modes.
Masters courses provided
The Westminster MSc in Transport Planning & Management course is offered in both full-time and part-time modes, the former normally taken in 12 months and the latter in 24 (an option of 36 months is also available). It comprises three core modules in Transport Economics, Comparative Transport Policy and Statistics & Survey Methods for Transport; and three specialist modules from a range of six, including Transport & Land Use, Public Passenger Transport, Urban Traffic Policy, Airline Management & Planning, Airport Management & Planning, and Freight Transport & Logistics Services.
The MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management is a full-time course, operated jointly with Arnhem Business School in The Netherlands; Molde University College in Norway; and ICN Business School, Metz in France. All students take three core modules in semester one at Westminster, with the scope for taking specialist modules and completing their dissertations at any one of the four partner institutions, dependent upon areas in which they wish to specialise. A part-time option (based at Westminster only) has been approved from 2007/08.
All of the taught modules are assessed through examinations and coursework.
In both courses, an in-depth dissertation is an integral part, comprising one third of total credits. The subject matter is normally related to at least one of the specialist modules taken, and in the case of part-time students, is often linked with activities at their place of work.
In addition, the Department runs a number of short courses in aviation, which students have the opportunity of attending as part of their studies.
Student Profile
The majority of students on the Transport Planning & Management course are part-timers, generally working with local authorities, Transport for London or transport consultants in the London and South East region. A smaller number of full-time students come from both the UK and other countries. The MSc European Logistics course has an international mix of students, both from European and non-European countries. Interaction between full-time and part-time student groups is encouraged. Many graduates have gone on to successful careers in the transport and logistics sectors, often holding senior positions.
Key staff
Professor Austin Smyth is Head of the Transport Studies Department. Professor Michael Browne has particular responsibility for research and teaching in the field of logistics, and Professor Peter White for work in public transport and co-ordinating research studies by postgraduate students.
