Background
Teaching
My principal teaching responsibilities are in the MSc Transport Planning & Management course, in survey methods for transport, public transport systems, and co-ordination of MSc dissertation studies.
Research and Consultancy
I am the author of a textbook on public transport, and many published papers. My research in recent years has focussed on the effects of privatisation and deregulation in the coach and
local bus industries, followed by the impacts of rail privatisation in Britain. I have particular
interests in data collection in public transport, especially that from smartcard systems, and in the effects of service quality on ridership.
Some recent examples of research and consultancy:
Current activities may be found on the Transport Studies Group website www.westminster.ac.uk/transport/
I was commissioned by the Passenger Transport Executive Group (PTEG) to produce the report ‘Factors Affecting the Decline of Bus Use in the Metropolitan Areas’ in 2008, available
via the website www.pteg.net. This examines factors behind the marked differences in bus ridership trends between London and other metropolitan areas in Britain, with implications for policy.
In 2006-2007 I managed a study undertaken jointly with research colleagues at University College London and Imperial College London into the effects of teleworking and teleconferencing on transport, sponsored by British Telecom and Transport for London.
I have supervised 10 successfully completed M Phil/PhD studies at the University of Westminster, and currently supervise six other research students.
External Activities
I have acted as external examiner for two masters’ courses in transport, and about fifteen M Phil/PhD studies at other universities.
I am a member of the editorial board of ‘Transport Reviews’
