Research study

At Westminster, we are known for high-quality internationally recognised research in a wide range of subjects, for our combination of pure, practice-led and applied approaches, and for using our knowledge for the betterment of society.

We pride ourselves on the breadth and diversity of our work, and our mission is one of excellence in research that ‘makes a difference’, addressing real-world challenges to the benefit of industry, the professions, academia and society as a whole.  We have a well-developed research degree programme and a reputation for delivering high standards in research degree study in subjects ranging from Education to Life Sciences, and from practice based Art and Design projects to political theory.

Our reputation for broad-based and high-quality research was reinforced by the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008), which benchmarks the quality of UK university research in the national and international context.  The RAE2008 confirmed that more than three quarters of our research in 20 different subject areas was internationally recognised or better, with significant areas achieving world leading and internationally excellent status.

At Westminster we are committed to developing our research to make a real difference to the lives of communities, both in the UK and abroad, transferring knowledge to the benefit of students and wider society through taught courses, research supervision, knowledge transfer, enterprise activities and research dissemination.  To achieve this, we have built strong links with business and industry, and have developed a rapidly growing portfolio of enterprise and consultancy activity.

We provide a well-developed infrastructure for the quality assurance of our research degree programmes, and we have won external recognition from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and others for our research degrees provision in specific areas.  We are committed to developing and nurturing the next generation of researchers to take forward our mission of excellence, creativity and innovation for the benefit of wider society.

We offer research degree programmes in most of our subject areas, and you can find further details by clicking here. You can also find out more about our work by visiting our electronic archive of research publications and other research outputs by Westminster staff, click here.
