Individual Projects
Diurnal Patterns of Cortisol Secretion
We have investigated the awakening cortisol response in relation to the rest of the diurnal cycle. We have published a paper recommending the most satisfactory way of determining basal cortisol secretory activity using multiple samples as well as how best to reflect this activity when collecting a single sample only. We have shown that overall levels of cortisol throughout the day relate to habitual time of awakening which may be a reflection of trait circadian activity. We have also shown that the size of the awakening cortisol response is related to cold symptom reporting. In contrast the underlying 12-hour cortisol cycle is related to mood (over a 10-week prospective period).

Acute Modulation of Mucosal Immunity by Psychological Manipulations
We have demonstrated that negative and positive mood manipulations can have immediate but different effects upon the secretory immune system. In particular we have shown that 'active coping' can mobilize salivary secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) within minutes of challenge whereas 'passive coping' causes reduced transport of this antibody. This is important as it informs the debate as to how different types of stress modulate the secretory immune system and hence susceptibility to infection and disease.

Work, funded by the MRC, has investigated the effects of ageing and stress on brain dopamine systems in the rat. These investigations have revealed that repeated minor stressors, throughout the life span of a rat, can accelerate ageing (degeneration) of these dopamine systems.
