Institute of Ideas: Battle for China (day conference)

On 12th July 2008 the Institute of Ideas was holding a one day event of debates interrogating attitudes to - and prejudices about - today's China. CMC Director Hugo de Burgh, was speaking at the conference along with Frank Furedi, Mark Leonard and Deepak Lal. He recently contributed to a conference on China at the Royal Society and spoke on China’s impact at The Future of England Conference in April 2008, also addressed by Frank Field MP and Simon Hughes MP.

Chair at the China Media Festival (The Centre of Chinese Studies, SOAS, and China Now)

The Director of the Centre, Hugo de Burgh, was on the judging panel of, and awarded the prizes at, the Fashion Awareness Direct Competition Competition 2008 on 22 April. FAD involves young designers at fashion colleges in the UK. All UK fashion colleges and universities regard it as the 'must-enter' competition integrating art, fashion and culture. This year's theme was 'Chinese pagoda'.
