The focus is identification of factors which influence the ability of breast cancer to spread to secondary organs – development of metastasis.
Uniquely the projects undertaken address three interlinked areas which may influence the patient outcome.
The team is characterising/ validating biomarkers and potential targets for metastatic breast, colorectal and prostate cancer. These translational research studies utilise with tissue/ body fluids from cancer patients and are augmented by the use of in vitro cell line models of cancers with different phenotypes.
Against Breast Cancer
The laboratory receives core-funding from the Charity Against Breast Cancer.
Latest Projects
Patients as authors
This research is part of a PhD which aims to extend current modes of health documentary by empowering Breast cancer patients to become co-authors of a film.
Diet and Lifestyle research
A core team of researchers work in collaboration with Dr Claire Robertson, studying diet (particularly phytoestrogen intake), complementary medicine use, lifestyle factors and their effect on breast cancer recurrence.
Biochemistry and Immunology research
The team focuses on carbohydrate antigens and the natural immunity of breast cancer patients to glycans/glycoproteins. The lab expertise is in areas of cancer cell biology with a focus on cancer glycobiology and glycoproteomics.
