Our role in higher education

Since 1838 the University of Westminster has been a great innovator and dynamic international educational institution.

Nearly 170 years later and the University continues to strive for excellence and lead the world in ground-breaking research.

It heads the field in areas including art and design, electronic engineering, law, and media and communication. It has also been recognised by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) as a Centre for Excellence in professional learning from the workplace.

Based in the heart of London, set to stage the Summer Olympic Games in 2012, the University is home to more than 20,000 students from 150 nations.

Its dedication to teaching, enrichment and development has lead to a whole host of well known names graduating through the University’s doors  including - Sir Alexander Fleming; Sinclair Beecham MBE, co-founder of Pret à Manger; Christopher Bailey, chief creative officer of Burberry; Stephen K Amos, comedian; Danny Wallace, author and presenter; Robert Bellinger, former Lord Mayor of London and director of Arsenal Football Club; Paul Xuereb, president of Malta; Quentin Crisp, writer and raconteur; Annie Nightingale MBE – BBC Radio 1 and pop group The Feeling.

And it doesn’t stop there.

The University of Westminster has embarked on an exciting new project which aims to revive the birthplace of modern cinema.

The refurbishment of its Regent Street headquarters, the venue for the Lumiere brothers first public moving picture show in the country in 1896, will return the UK’s first public cinema to its past glory.

Not bad for the former Royal Polytechnic Institution which, in 1837, hoped to provide “an institution where the Public, at little expense, may acquire practical knowledge of the various arts and branches of science connected with manufacturers, mining Operations and rural economy”.
