Entry requirements for study

If you are studying your first degree and wish to study for one semester or full year, the entrance requirements are:

  • You must have successfully completed 1 year of a degree programme at a recognised university or college
  • If you are from a country that requires a Student visa, and you wish to take the internship programme or study for the academic year, you must be currently enrolled on a programme in your home country and intend to return to resume your studies after your participation in the study abroad programme.
  • You must be 18 years of age or older when you begin the programme
  • If you are student from a country using the US GPA system, you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. If you wish to study subjects relating to Media, Arts & Design, you need a cumulative 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • If you are from a country with a different grading system, you must have an average of a C grade, or good, or equivalent. If you wish to study subjects relating to Media, Arts & Design, you must have an average of a B grade, or very good, or equivalent
  • You must be in good academic standing

Undergraduate English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide official proof of your English language ability. Proof of English must be in the form of a recent IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL or Cambridge English Language Examination score.

To study undergraduate modules, you will need a minimum score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, except if you wish to study subjects relating to Media, Arts and Design where you will require a minimum score of IELTS 6.5.

To undertake the internship programme, or to study for the academic year, you will require a Student Visa  The Home Office requires that you achieve a minimum score of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent in each of the four language components (listening, writing, speaking, and reading).

  • You must be a graduate and hold an undergraduate degree.
  • If you are from a country that requires a Student visa and you wish to take the internship programme you must be currently enrolled in a Master’s programme in your home country and intend to return to resume your studies after your participation in the study abroad programme.
  • If you are a student from a country using the US GPA system you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale in your current Master’s degree programme. If you wish to study subjects relating to Media, Arts & Design you must have a cumulative 3.0 grade on a 4.0 scale.
  • If you are from a country with a different grading system, you must have a grade C or good or equivalent in your current Master’s degree or, if you are not studying a Master’s degree, you must have graduated from your undergraduate degree with a C grade or good or equivalent. If you wish to study subjects relating to Media, Arts and Design you must have a B grade or very good or equivalent.
  • If you do not yet have a semester’s worth of grades from your Master’s degree or you are not enrolled in a Master’s degree programme then we will consider the result of your undergraduate degree.
  • Students on the postgraduate programme must pick modules that are relevant to their Master’s degree in their home country.

Postgraduate English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide official proof of your English language ability. Proof of English must be in the form of a recent IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL or Cambridge English Language Examination score.

To study graduate modules, you will need a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, except you wish to study subjects relating to Media, Arts and Design where you will require a minimum score of IELTS 7.0.

To undertake the internship programme you will require a Student Visa.

The Home Office requires that you achieve a minimum score of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent in each of the four language components (listening, writing, speaking, and reading).

Exceptions for Student Visa English Language Evidence and Programme Entry for Postgraduate Students

You do not need to prove your knowledge of English for a Student visa or for entry to our programme if you are a non-native speaker of English if you have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Australia
  • the Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Dominica
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica
  • New Zealand
  • St Kitts and Nevis
  • St Lucia

  • Trinidad and Tobago

  • USA

We can accept applicants:

  • Who will have graduated from high school at the time they join the programme and will be 18 years of age when they attend the summer school
  • Current university students
  • University graduates

To apply for the summer school you must provide evidence of your academic standing:

  • If you have completed high school or equivalent we require your High School Diploma or IB or your A Level results if you are a UK student
  • If you are about to graduate from high school we require your High School Transcript or IB
  • If you are a current university student we require your current university transcript
  • If you are not a current student we require your last academic record

Please note: evidence must be either the original or an official certified copy.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language you need to provide official proof of your English language ability to ensure you can cope with the demands of the course. We accept IELTS level of 6.0 (each section’s score to be at least 5.5.), TOEFL 78 (reading: 18, listening: 17, speaking: 20, writing: 17) or equivalent.

We are happy to consider a variety of English language tests (Cambridge, DuoLingo, Pearsons, etc) and other proofs of English language knowledge. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any queries.

Academic requirements

USA

If you are from a US institution of higher education (eg a university or college) the minimum requirement is a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

EU

If you are from an EU institution you must be able to provide proof of good academic standing. Achieved marks can range from a minimum of satisfactory, good, very good or above, depending on the country of schooling.

Outside the EU or USA

All International qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate will be considered.

UK

If you are from the UK you must have a minimum of two passes at GCE A Level. If you would like to discuss your current grades, please email us at .

Additional entry requirements for:

Students from China

Students from China must have achieved one of the following:

  • 211, 985 and top national universities: 70%+ or GPA 2.0/4
  • National Universities: 75%+ or GPA 2.5/4
  • High-ranking Private Universities: 80% or GPA 3.0/4

Students from Japan

Students from Japan must have 50% of grades at 'A' or 'B', where the grading scale for A and B is 70%–100%.

Students from South Korea

Students from South Korea must have either a GPA of 2.8/4.0 or 50% of grades at 'A' or 'B'.

EFL+ Study Abroad English language requirements

To be able to apply for this programme, you must have an IELTS score of 5.0 with a minimum score of 5.0 in writing and with no other component (reading, listening, speaking), below a score of 4.5.

If you need to take an English language test for your visa application, please be aware that from 5 April 2015, only IELTS taken in test centres approved by the Home Office are acceptable for use in a UK visa application for the University of Westminster. The University cannot make its own assessment of your English language ability for this programme.

Approved test centres may offer both secure IELTS tests (SELT tests) and non-secure tests (non-SELT tests). You must make sure you book onto a secure (SELT) test. The IELTS online booking form refers to these secure tests as 'IELTS for UKVI'.

We recommend you book your test well in advance of your course start date, as places on the tests may book up quickly.

Semester Study (no internship)

If you choose to study abroad with us for a semester and do not take an internship, you can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa. For most students, you can do this on arrival in the UK at the airport. Internships

If you choose the internship programme, as part of a semester programme or the academic year, you will require a Student visa.

Academic Year Study
