Action Short of Strike May 2010

Dear Colleague,

Regrettably the academic staff trade union, UCU, has formally notified the University that they are calling on their members to take continuous action short of a strike in the form of ‘a refusal to carry out any marking of any description,’ as of 21 May 2010.

This notification follows the recent strike action called by UCU in protest at staff cost reductions the University is seeking to achieve in areas of provision which are financially unviable. It is important to note only 16% of our academic staff have voted for action short of a strike.

The University will take every reasonable measure to minimise the impact of UCU’s threatened action on students and staff who are working normally. In order to make arrangements to protect students and minimise the impact of this action on them, and because the University does not know which staff are members of UCU, we will again have to ask all academic staff and part-time visiting lecturers (whether or not you are a union member) to indicate whether or not you intend to participate in this industrial action.

To do this you need to complete a short online form at www.westminster.ac.uk/shortofstrike  by 5pm on Wednesday 26 May 2010.

Staff who do not submit a response will be deemed to be taking industrial action.
