Accreditation in Canada

To practise law in Canada, after completing your LLB degree in the UK you will need to demonstrate your competence to the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA). The NCA will assess your qualifications, taking into account your academic and professional background, and will make recommendations regarding further exams or legal education required. This will depend on how many steps towards qualifications in the UK have been taken (ie. LLB, LLB plus LPC/BVC, training contract) and the grades you have obtained. Upon successful completion of these requirements, the NCA will issue a Certificate of Qualification. The NCA does not assess individuals who wish to become members of Barreau du Québec or the Chambre des notaires du Québec.

Studying Law at Westminster

Westminster Law School has a long history of welcoming Canadian students to study with us in central London. Due to our shared Common Law heritage the study of Law in the UK is similar to that of Canada. Teaching is by lectures and seminars for each subject. Our personal tutor system allows each student to have a member of staff who is there to provide one-to-one support during your studies. Westminster Law School also has several contacts with London Law firms and other businesses employing Law graduates, as well as a dedicated careers service to support you as you begin your professional life.

In the UK, students enter undergraduate law programmes immediately after high school, embarking on a three-year Law LLB Honours degree. We welcome Canadian students either directly after completing high school or after you have graduated from your first degree.
