About Cambridge ESOL

Cambridge ESOL is the part of the University of Cambridge that provides qualifications for learners of English. The exams are well known for their quality assessment of real English, as used in everyday work, study and leisure situations. Cambridge ESOL is a leading awarding body for qualifications relating to English for speakers of other languages.

We are the fourth largest centre in the UK. More than 1,500 people take their Cambridge ESOL exams at the University of Westminster each year.

Computer-based testing

The University of Westminster offers Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for Cambridge ESOL FCE and CAE examinations. The CBT versions follow the same test format as the paper-based tests.

The speaking part of the test is completed in exactly the same way as in the paper-based version – through face-to-face assessment. The CBT includes the same question types, which are marked on the same criteria. The certificate awarded, and its value, is identical to the paper-based test.

There are a number of benefits to computer-based testing:

  • Faster access to results, with scores available online just three weeks after the test
  • The ability to edit your answers on screen during the exam
  • The ability to adjust the volume of your headphones to suit your needs during the listening element of the test
  • A quick online tutorial to familiarise yourself with the programme before you begin your exam
  • An online timer and help functions allow you to get the best from your exam performance
  • Many people are also now more comfortable completing a test with a keyboard and mouse rather than paper and pen

Although this is an exciting addition to our services, the University of Westminster will continue to offer paper-based examinations for all Cambridge ESOL Main Suite Modules.
