Knowledge Catalyst

The Knowledge Catalyst scheme is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. It supports partnerships between universities and non-academic partners, such as businesses, charities, not-for-profit organisations and some publicly funded bodies. It is aimed particularly at the creative industries and cultural and arts sectors.

How does it work?

The Knowledge Catalyst Scheme works similarly to the Knowledge Transfer Partnership Scheme, where you will work with the University on a project which will significantly develop the operations of your business. A recent graduate is employed to manage the work of the project, supported by an academic supervisor from the University. In most cases, the graduate will be based at your company.

Who can apply?

The following types of organisations can apply for the scheme:

  • commercial enterprises, not-for-profit organisations, charities, or public bodies based within the UK
  • no more than 50 employees at the time of applying
  • larger organisations which can demonstrate why the KTP scheme is not accessible to them
  • Trade associations and other bodies representing a range of organisations

How will I benefit?

The scheme is intended to deliver significant benefits:
  • Direct benefits include increased turnover, improved efficiency, identification of new markets or strategies etc.
  • Indirect benefits might include cultural outcomes, such as new exhibitions, performances or broadcast material, or social impacts such as providing services which meet the needs of their users more closely.

How long can projects last?

Projects may last between 3 and 15 months.

What level of funding is provided?

The AHRC will fund 60% of the eligible project and partnership costs. The Enterprise Partner must fund the remaining 40% of costs. There is no maximum amount of funding per project.
