Ghanaian Alumni dinner

The Ghanaian Alumni dinner was held on 30 October in Accra’s African Regent Hotel. There was a fantastic turnout on the night with over 20 University of Westminster alumni in attendance; some having travelled 200 kilometres! It was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, make some new ones and relive experiences of the University. Some of the alumni had only graduated from the University recently while others had been back in Ghana for several years; the oldest attendee had graduated in 1987! One of the people I met had joined the Polytechnic of Central London in 1991 and graduated from the University of Westminster in 1992 when our university status was conferred.

There was a great deal of enthusiasm for the establishment of a Ghanaian Alumni Association.

Turkey Partner reception

On the 17 September 2010, hidden amongst skyscrapers and minarets, the University of Westminster held an exclusive reception in the ballroom of the British Consul General, Istanbul.

VIPs of the Turkish education world were there, as was the press, some of our Istanbul based partners and a delegation of Westminster staff, including Vice Chancellor Professor Geoffrey Petts.

However, the people who really brought the event to life were the 20 Westminster alumni who attended the event. Travelling from far and wide, one Westminster graduate came all the way from Adana, in the south of Turkey – a good 1000km away!

Roughly 75-80 Turkish students study at the University of Westminster each year, and from the cross-section of students who came to the reception, it was clear that a wide variety of different subjects are studied. From lawyers to film-directors, all the Alumni at the event had a different story. There was even one alum who graduated in 1980!

The event was held with the aim of developing more institutional partnerships within Turkey, announcing a new range of scholarships specifically for Turkish students, and to launch our new online Turkey Alumni Group.
