Foundation courses

Foundation courses offer students who are unable to apply directly to a degree programme the opportunity to study the subject of their choice and progress to a level where they can enter an undergraduate course – upon successful completion.

These courses are suitable for both mature students who may not have formal qualifications, and students of any age without the entry qualifications for our named degree programmes.

The School of Life Sciences offers two foundation courses:

  • The Biosciences foundation course: this provides an introductory year to the following full-time Honours degree programmes: BSc Honours Biochemistry, BSc Honours Biomedical Sciences, BSc Honours Biotechnology, BSc Honours Forensic Biology, BSc Honours Human and Medical Science, BSc Honours Human Nutrition, BSc Honours Microbiology, BSc Honours Molecular Biology and Genetics, BSc Honours Nutrition and Exercise Science, BSc Honours Physiology and Pharmacology
  • The Complementary Medicine foundation course: this provides an introductory year to the following full-time Honours degree programmes: BSc Honours Acupuncture, BSc Honours Complementary Therapies, BSc Honours Herbal Medicine, BSc Honours Naturopathy and BSc Honours Nutritional Therapy

Applications for these courses should be made through UCAS, and advice about how to do this can be found on our How to apply webpage.
